Senior Back End Engineer

Abacum is a Business Planning platform that brings reporting, collaboration, planning and forecasting into one product for modern finance teams.

Founded in 2020 by two former CFOs, the company now has more than 100 people across 30+ nationalities, with offices in New York, Toronto and Barcelona.

After raising more than $100M — including a $60M Series B in 2025 — Abacum is scaling both its product and the engineering challenges behind it. Customers include Strava, BetterUp, Kajabi, Abridge and hundreds of other businesses.

• Work closely with engineering, product and design to test ideas and turn complex finance workflows into intuitive product experiences
• Build performant, reusable backend capabilities for data-heavy features, calculations and visualisations
• Develop the building blocks that let customers create their own models, variables and formulas
• Own the components you build in production, including their reliability, performance and observability
• Use customer feedback to continuously improve the product alongside Product and Operations
• Scale a complex data and calculation platform as customers grow in number, size and sophistication
• Help shape technical design, engineering standards and the culture of a growing team

• Strong senior-level backend engineering experience with Python
• Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and production-grade data systems
• Confidence working with complex data structures and performance-sensitive applications
• A solid understanding of observability and the operational side of running software
• A product mindset: you care about the user problem, not only the technical implementation
• High ownership, curiosity and the ability to learn quickly
• Collaborative communication and professional English

• Experience with Pandas, Polars or comparable DataFrame technologies
• Experience building machine-learning or AI-powered solutions
• Experience scaling complex data platforms

• Full-time, fully remote role from Spain
