Own the journey from a signed debt facility to a reliable production deal, combining deep backend engineering, client advisory and real-world financial data.
About the opportunity
Fence is building internet-native debt capital markets: making debt global, efficient and programmable.
Its live debt-facility management platform digitises credit agreements, integrates dynamic data sources and automates capital and asset flows. Around thirty facilities are already live across BNPL, trade finance, real estate, ISAs and consumer lending.
This role joins a new Forward Deployed Engineering team alongside the nine-person Product Engineering team. You will own each assigned deal end to end, from functional definition to production and operational handover.
What you'll do
- Own the onboarding pipeline for each deal: data structures, schemas, declaration services, metrics, covenants, dashboards, reports and, where relevant, on-chain transaction builders and waterfall configuration
- Turn credit-agreement rules into production calculations and controls covering eligibility, borrowing base, covenants, cash and reporting calendars
- Challenge incomplete functional specifications and resolve unanswered questions with Operations before building
- Own client data intake, ingestion and reconciliation across declared, stored and expected payment data
- Lead working sessions with client operations, credit and engineering teams, turning discussions into clear decisions
- Create runbooks and invariant checks so Operations can manage the deal after go-live without engineering support
- Identify recurring patterns across deals and share them with Product Engineering without delaying client delivery
What we're looking for
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong programming fundamentals and a clear separation of business logic from I/O
- Production-grade Python backend skills with FastAPI, Pydantic, PostgreSQL and AWS
- A track record of refining requirements, designing, shipping, proving and handing over solutions end to end
- Direct client-facing experience leading technical sessions and constructively challenging customer requests
- Confidence working with imperfect real-world data, including SQL, spreadsheets, PDFs and reconciliations
- Integration experience across third-party APIs, inconsistent payloads and file-based data pipelines
- Practical, critical use of AI-assisted development tools
- Strong professional English for client conversations and asynchronous communication
Bonus points
- Experience with lending, payments, private credit, treasury, accounting, insurance or other rule-heavy financial domains
What’s on offer
- €60K–€80K salary range, flexible for the right profile
- Up to 30% performance bonus plus stock options
- Madrid preferred; open to candidates elsewhere in Europe and on the US East Coast
- Hybrid preferred, with openness to future client-site travel
- A new, high-priority team with four openings and substantial ownership
- Async-first, written-first culture working across product, finance, operations and customers
- Interview process: two culture and fit conversations, a 2–4 hour take-home exercise and two technical interviews
